Courses are offered monthly and run for 2 hours per class, 4 classes per course, over a 4-week period (except for DJ 101 which runs 10 hours). 100-level courses are introductory, 200-level courses are intermediate, and 300-level courses are advanced. Refer to our Course Schedule for course dates, times, and locations. We can also bring our school to you through our Mobile DJ Mix Academy.

DJ 101: DJ'ing I

(Required course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

With turntables outselling guitars 2 to 1, the popularity of DJ’ing continues to grow exponentially. This introductory course is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills related to vinyl and CDbased DJ’ing. Students will explore electronic music history, music theory concepts, equipment operation, and music acquisition. Through a series of hands-on practice, students will be taught the essentials of mixing music on beat with vinyl and CDs.

DJ 111: Vinyl DJ'ing I

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

This introductory course is for students who want to focus exclusively on mixing with records and improve their vinyl beat mixing skills. Topics to be covered include beat mixing dance, electronica, and hip-hop music. Students will be involved with intense hands-on practice during class and will be able to receive real-time feedback on their mixing skills.

DJ 121: CD DJ'ing I

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

The CD has been the chosen media for the vast majority of DJs and now with the popularity of MP3s, threatens to surpass the long-standing vinyl record. Equipment manufacturers are continually introducing CD players with more amazing features that not only let you mix with ease but manipulate and enhance the music. This introductory course focuses exclusively on learning how to fine-tune your CD beat mixing skills and leverage the powerful features found on professional CD players.

DJ 131: Scratching I

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

The use of the turntable as a musical instrument has been one of the more popular applications of DJ’ing since the birth of hip-hop. Hundreds of DJs compete yearly in contests like the DMC World Championships to showcase their turntable techniques. In this introductory course we cover scratching, beat jiggling, and more. Students will be continually involved in hands-on practice during class.

DJ 141: Mobile DJ'ing I

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

Want to turn your love for music and DJ’ing into a source of additional income? Become an entrepreneur and find out what it takes to become a mobile jock and entertain at weddings, school and corporate events, and private parties. Topics in this introductory course include business startup, equipment, music, event management, troubleshooting, and entertaining.

DJ 151: PC DJ'ing I

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

Many DJs are not lugging their records and CDs to gigs but are simply bringing a laptop loaded with all of their favorite MP3s. In this introductory course we will prime you for using MP3 DJ’ing products such as Final Scratch and PCDJ. Learn the basics of using your laptop as your music library and DJ’ing tool. Topics include digital music, hardware and software, ripping MP3s, introduction to Final Scratch, introduction to PCDJ FX, and more.

DJ 161: Hip-Hop DJ'ing I

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

This introductory course is dedicated to hip-hop DJs where we’ll explore methods of mixing, scratching, and blending in a hip-hop club atmosphere. Learn how to get gigs, deal with promoters and club owners, and attain the tools necessary to be a successful party DJ. Upon completion, students will have defined their own sound & style and know the ins and outs of hip-hop DJ’ing tricks, equipment, and music.

Intermediate Courses

DJ 201: DJ'ing II

(Required course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

This intermediate course builds upon the fundamentals learned in DJ 101 and is designed to take those learned skills to a more intermediate and professional level. We will discuss music programming, set structure, and other DJ’ing techniques. There will be increased focus on beat mixing and other equipment-based tricks.

DJ 231: Scratching II

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

This intermediate course picks up where DJ 131 left off. Students will practice several new fader and faderless scratches and learn about beat chopping, drumming, and a cappella mixing. In addition, music theory topics and how to create a routine will be covered on both turntables and CD players.

DJ 241: Mobile DJ'ing II

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

In this follow-up course to DJ 141, students will learn how to run a profitable mobile DJ service. Topics in this intermediate course include strategic business planning, marketing, operations, sound engineering, and client management. Upon completion, students will have the necessary information to grow their own mobile DJ service and improve upon their existing mobile DJ offerings.

DJ 251: PC DJ'ing II (Final Scratch v1.5)

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

A few years ago Stanton Magnetic revolutionized the DJ industry with their ground-breaking product for DJ’ing using a laptop: Final Scratch. The new version 1.5 runs natively on Windows 2000/XP or MacOS 10.3 “Panther” and does not require a Linux dual-boot. DJs can manipulate MP3 songs on their laptop as if they were recorded on a CD or record. Topics in this intermediate course include Final Scratch installation, usage, troubleshooting, fine tuning, and PC DJ’ing.

DJ 252: PC DJ'ing II (PCDJ FX v7.0)

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

Imagine having your CD players, mixer, and music all in one place. Now you can select, cue, and play your MP3 songs all from your laptop. Visiosonic’s top-of-the-line professional DJ and remixing software now includes Virtual Rack Module (VRM) Expansion Packs. This version also allows you to sample, loop, reverse, and break. DJ 301: DJ'ing III

(Required course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

In this advanced DJ’ing course, students will learn about harmonic mixing, EQ and deck effects, hotmixing, and more. Students are expected to have sufficient beat mixing skills and practice prior to taking this course. Additional scratching and turntablism techniques will be practiced during class.

DJ 331: Turntablism

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

This advanced course picks up where DJ 231 left off. Advanced scratches, digital remixing, and beat juggling will be covered. Students will learn about Turntablist Transcription Methodology (TTM) and how to graphically represent several popular scratches. Students will also learn about how to create a routine, battle, and DJ in a band.

DJ 341: Mobile Entertainment

(Elective course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

This advanced course is for mobile DJs who want to become an Entertainment Jockey (EJ) versus a DJ who simply plays music. Customers expect DJs they hire to do weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, and school events to be interactive with the crowd through the use of MC’ing, games, and other activities. This advanced course will transform you from being a DJ to an EJ and teach you how to command more money from your events.

DJ 401: Final Project

(Required course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying)

This is the 4th and final required course for the Certificate Program in Disc Jockeying. Students will create a 30-minute (minimum) CD recording of 6 – 10 beatmatched songs.
